Broadleaf Plantain is an herbaceous plant that belongs to the plantain family. It originates from Europe and Asia, but has naturalized in temperate areas around the world. Broadleaf Plantain grows in fields, grasslands, and near roads and footpaths. It prefers disturbed habitats with poor, compacted soil. The ability of Broadleaf Plantain to survive frequent trampling and to colonize compacted soils makes it important for soil rehabilitation. Its roots break up hardpan surfaces, while simultaneously holding together the soil to prevent erosion.

In spite of its lush foliage and attractive flower spikes, it is generally considered a “weed” and is mostly grown for its many medicinal properties.

Direct sowing seeds in autumn brings the most success. As long as you experience temperatures of 40 degrees F or below for a good part of the winter. Alternatively, you can start seed indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last predicted frost. Sow the seeds in normal potting soil, and put the plant in a warm, sunny location. In about 14-21 days, the seeds will begin to germinate.
