While not a native rose, Dog Rose is a common sight throughout the Rocky Mountains and has become naturalized in the region. Cross-breeding in the wild is common between rose species and can make identification difficult. In general, the Dog Rose will have large, pale pink (sometimes white) blooms, and prominent thorns that are curved. Flowers have a sweet, rose-scent that is unbeatable and beloved by pollinators. Blooms are followed by bright red, oval-shaped hips which persist into winter.

Dog Rose can grow up to 9’ tall. Its climbing nature allows it to scale nearby structures or grow into dense thickets, making it a valuable plant for wildlife habitats. Dog Rose can be invasive in some regions, be sure to consider the specifics of your particular growing region.
