Galium triflorum
(also known as Sweet-scented bedstraw, Cudweed)
zones 4-7
30 seeds
You’ll find Fragrant Bedstraw rambling along forest floors, loosely climbing whatever plants, logs, or rocks it encounters. The leaves are bright green and narrow and occur in whorls of 6, radiating around the stem. Flowers are small, white, and have four petals and bloom from June-August. The foliage gives off a sweet, grassy odor making it easy to picture the dried plants being used as pleasant-smelling straw for stuffing mattresses and pillows.
This species is found all throughout North America in a wide range of growing conditions, but prefers a moist, shady location.
To grow, simply scatter seed on prepared soil in fall and allow to overwinter. Keep watered and weeded throughout winter and spring and through the growing season until established.
