Dodecatheon jeffreyi
(also known as Primula jeffreyi, Sierra shooting star, Tall mountain shooting star)
zones 2-5
35 seeds
Jeffrey’s Shooting Star can be found on the banks of mountain lakes and rivers, and in moist meadows at altitudes. It bears pretty blooms, typically reddish-purple in color, with yellow collars from late spring into summer. When found streamside, blooms of Jeffrey’s Shooting Star are an indication to fishermen that the steelhead trout are migrating and it’s time to put a line in the water. Its alternate name of Tall Mountain Shooting Star identifies this species as the tallest of the Dodecatheons, with flowers stalks reaching up to 24” tall.
The name Dodecatheon can be traced back to ancient Greek mythology. Dodeca (meaning “12”) and theon (meaning “gods”) is a reminder of a story that twelve Greek gods assumed the responsibility of watching over members of this genus.
Seeds require cold stratification. Sow seeds outdoors in fall in prepared soil. Keep weeded and watered until seedlings emerge. Jeffrey’s Shooting Star is a moisture loving plant, so be sure to give it a site with plenty of water.
