Narrowleaf Skullcap
Scutellaria galericulata
(also known as Marsh skullcap
zones 3-6
25 seeds
Skullcap is a delicate, erect perennial with smooth, square stems growing about 12” tall. The leaves are opposite, thin and egg-shaped, with toothed margins. The flowers are blue, two-lipped, and in elongate groups on stalks in the upper half of the plant. Flowers resemble penstemons, but in skullcap flowers occur in axils of the leaves.
Skullcap is a medicinal herb with many uses
Skullcap is very easy to germinate. Directly sow the seeds into the flowerbed in autumn or spring, or start them in flats. If growing in flats, transplant them early as they quickly become root-bound. Skullcap likes fertile soil and part shade or full sun. Keep the area well weeded and the plants will eventually spread.
