Antennaria luzuloides
(also known as Small-flowering everlasting, Silvery brown pussytoes, Rush pussytoes, Catspaws, Ladies-tobacco)
zones 4-7
100 seeds
There are many varieties of pussytoes in the Rocky Mountain region, and while they aren’t particularly stunning on their own they are so abundant that one can’t help but notice them. The Woodrush Pussytoe is one of the taller species, reaching 6-24” tall. Unlike other Antennaria species it is not mat-forming.
Pussytoes begin blooming in late spring and persist throughout the summer. Flowers picked soon after blooming make lovely dried flowers for home decorating and can even be dyed if desired. The plant derives its common name from the small clusters of flower heads which resemble the paw pad of a cat.
Woodrush Pussytoes is most commonly found in dry open slopes and prairies at mid-elevations, but is fairly tolerant of a wide range of conditions. Seed needs cold stratification before sowing indoors or outdoors in spring. For easiest planting, sow outdoors in place in fall. Keep watered and weeded. Plants will sprout in spring when desired conditions are reached.
